Prioritize

Prioritize Prioritize Prioritize By Maeve Maddox Some speakers hate to hear people use the word prioritize, complaining that â€Å"it’s a made-up word that shouldn’t be used.† Prioritize is a fairly new word, coined in the 1950s, and growing in popularity since the early 1960s. Speakers use it to mean: to give priority to to designate something as worthy of special attention to arrange items to be dealt with in order of importance to establish priorities to establish priorities for a set of tasks Here are some examples of its use online: KMT, CCP agree to prioritize service trade agreement How to Prioritize Your Debts Council Approves Two Projects That Prioritize Pedestrian and Bike Safety Four Must Know To-Do Lists To Prioritize Tasks Strengthening parliaments in nascent democracies: the need to prioritize legislative reforms As late as 1982, twenty years after prioritize entered the language, the OED acknowledged its existence, but included an apologetic note, saying, â€Å"prioritize is a word that at present sits uneasily in the language.† Thirty-two years later, the OED site employs the word prioritizing unapologetically in a discussion of the term â€Å"network neutrality†: This concept [network neutrality] has been the subject of much debate in recent years, reflecting something axiomatic for many Internet users; that all data on the net should be treated equally by Internet service providers, without favouring particular formats, products, or web sites by charging extra fees, prioritizing or blocking data of certain types, and so on. Speakers who still want to hold the line against prioritize could replace it with the phrase â€Å"to set priorities†: KMT, CCP agree to set service trade agreement priorities Council Approves Two Projects that set Priorities for Pedestrian and Bike Safety How to set priorities for your debts People who don’t like prioritize shouldn’t use it, but trying to stop other people from using it is futile. I’ll be happy to recommend a much more worthy target of opprobrium. How about the use of gift as a verb when we already have the perfectly serviceable word give: Lands gifted by donors are the foundation of SSU Preserves programs. The Greeks have gifted the world with many things. Teradata in the fall of 2010 gifted the Walton College of Business with a new Teradata 2650 system.   Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? How to Clean a Dorm Room in Under 20 Minutes

How to Clean a Dorm Room in Under 20 Minutes Your parents may be coming over, your partner may be stopping by, or you simply may want to pick up your room in order to have more space to work or study. Sometimes, however, even the smallest area can seem to contain a humongous mess. So just how can you clean your dorm room quickly and effectively? Fortunately for you, youre in college because youre smart. So take that educated brain of yours and put it to work! Put Clothes Away First things first: Put clothes and large items where they belong. If you have clothes on your bed, a jacket on the back of your chair, a blanket spilling onto the floor, and a scarf or two hanging off the lamp, your room can look incredibly messy. Spend a few minutes picking up clothes and large items and putting them where they should be (closet, hamper,  hook on the back of the door). And if you dont have an assigned place for the large items in your room, make one; that way, in the future, you can simply put it there to begin with and have one less thing making your room look messy. (Five-minute cheater fix: Throw everything in the closet.) Make Your Bed Sure, you dont live at home anymore, but making your bed will instantly transform your room from slovenly to stellar. Its amazing the way a clean bed can improve the look of a room. Make sure to make it nicely, too; it only takes a few extra seconds to smooth out the sheets, straighten the pillows, and make sure the comforter is evenly covering the whole bed (i.e, not touching the ground on one side and barely covering the mattress on the other). If one side of your bed is touching a wall, spend the extra 10 seconds to push the blankets down between the wall and the mattress so that the top surface still looks smooth. (Five-minute cheater fix: Dont smooth anything down or worry about the pillows; just fix the comforter or top blanket.) Put Other Things Away Put things away whenever possible. If you have a bunch of pens out on your desk and shoes collecting by the door, for example, get them out of sight. Put the pens in a little cup or a desk drawer; put your shoes back in your closet. Take a moment to stand still and look at what is still left out after youve made the bed and put the big things away. What can go into drawers? What can go into a closet? What can slide under your bed? (Five-minute cheater fix: Throw things into the closet or drawers and deal with them later.) Deal With Trash Fill up and then empty the trash. The key to emptying your trash is to fill it up first. Grab your trash can (or pull one from down the hallway to the front of your door) and walk around your room. Start in one corner and go in a spiral around the room, ending up in the center. What can be tossed? What dont you need? Be ruthless, too: That pen that only kinda works only some of the time needs to go, for example. You just might surprise yourself by seeing how much you can throw away in a few minutes and how much doing so will improve the look of your room. Once youve put things in your room trash can, take 30 seconds to empty it into a larger trash can down the hall or in the bathroom. (Five-minute cheater fix: There isnt one. Trash is trash and should be tossed pronto.) Tidy Up Tidy up the small things that are left. Close your eyes for a moment, take a deep breath (yes, even though youre in a hurry), and then open them again. Repeat the spiral you did with the trash can, this time organizing things as you move along. That pile of papers on your desk? Make the edges of it a little neater; you dont have time to go through it, but you can make it look a little tidier. Line up books so their edges are even. Close your laptop, straighten up pictures and other decorations, and make sure nothing is sticking out from under your bed. (Five-minute fix: Make sure things are relatively organized and try to put things at right angles or parallel to each other. Turn things with labels facing forward.) Take a Fresh Look Exit and re-enter your room as if you were a guest. Take a step out of your room, walk away for 10 seconds, and then re-enter your room as if you were a guest. Do the lights need to be turned on? The window opened? Room freshener sprayed? Chairs cleaned off so theres somewhere to sit? Walking into your room like youre doing so for the first time is a great way to notice any small details that might still need to be taken care of. (Five-minute fix: Spray your room with a room freshener. After all, whens the last time someones room smelled too good? Assume a little spritz will help and do it automatically.) Relax! Last but not least: Take a deep breath! After zipping around trying to clean and pick up your room, youll want to spend a moment calming down. Get a glass of water or something else to refresh yourself so that your visitors see not only a great-looking room but also a calm, collected friend or family member casually relaxing inside of it!

The Changing World of Work Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Changing World of Work - Research Paper Example In the last ten years, jobs have been outsourced in large numbers and a dramatic change has occurred in the location and method of work. Another key driver of the modern and more importantly, the future age is diversity in the workplace. The transformation of the world into a global village has removed the cultural barriers. More and more people migrate to other countries every year for studies, work or both. This has made society multicultural in general and the workplace in particular. There is the diversity of age, gender, culture, language, ethnicity, religion and caste. All of these factors of diversity give rise to the variety of perspectives which are quite beneficial for organizations in the competitive environment, but at the same time, also expose the organization to a lot of risks. Some of the risks include racism and dysfunctional conflicts among the employees whereas benefits include larger market value because of a diverse population of customers. Managers have experien ced a significant increase in job responsibilities as they have to not only address the needs of the customers but also have to fulfill the increased demands of employees. According to (Heerden), research concludes that young employees fundamentally look for three things in the changing world of work. They are briefly discussed below: 1. Opportunities for learning and development: Young people seek jobs where work would be challenging, yet they want to be rewarded upon succeeding. Professional growth at work is the biggest attraction for young job seekers. People want to serve in different positions and perform different roles in order to gain maximum experience. 2. Selection in a renowned organization which would decide the career path: In order to keep employees satisfied and motivated for work, employers need to share their strategies with employees and explain to them how their strategies are consistent with the requirements of the business. Thus, employees need to be engaged in work for which the employee-employer rapport is extremely essential. 3. Flexibility in life: Having achieved a higher standard of living, one of the key priorities of all working people is to have increased control over their personal and social life. The conventional 40 hr week that has been so for long is now changing. People want the freedom of duty hours and employers often have no problem unless the work is affected. In today’s work environment, ways to communicate have altered a lot. The changing trends impact many industries and hence, the career plans. A look into the future: In light of the aforementioned preferences of employees in the work environment, the work environment in the future would be more complying with the employees’ desires as it has in the past. It is obvious that an electronic system would be increased in use in the future. Therefore, it makes sense to assess the future work conditions for employees keeping the electronic system into conside ration.

Analysis and commentary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Analysis and commentary - Essay Example The discussion is healthy in the sense that it makes the whole world aware of Mr. Sarkozy’s way of handling racism issues. It is evident that he is concerned with making the French people be acquainted with their right place in their country (Lebovic, Bringing the Empire back Home: France in the Global Age 45). They are made to understand that being France entails a lot, and is a collective responsibility for everyone to understand all that being a French citizen entails. Lebovic asserts that most French citizens born of both French parents do not support the idea of immigration since they consider immigration to be the source of competition for national resources (Bringing the Empire back Home: France in the Global Age 8). Jean Marie Le Pen has been portrayed as a politician who is promoting racist politics in the sense that he out rightly opposes Mr. Sarkozy’s immigration policies. His statements have polarized the immigration debate; thus making people try to define who is French and who is not. Lebovic asserts that Le Pen opposed immigration from the word go, despite the efforts made by Mr. Sarkozy’s side to make him understand the importance of immigration and national identity policies (True France: The wars over Cultural Identity, 1900-1945, 34). In conclusion, the France’s identity debate should be treated as a matter of importance and urgency. Those opposed to the immigration policy should clearly analyze how the immigration policy affects the life of many French citizens who are not French citizens by birth before going against

Turkish Woman Essay Example for Free

Turkish Woman Essay Being able to assist a person when in need is one of the most satisfying psychological experiences a person goes through. Human beings have a social aspect in nature which makes them want to correlate with others especially those with whom one can easily relate with because of some similar characters such as culture, class, religion and class. At the same time a being for a foreign in another country is very challenging and calls for high tolerance and perseverance of the foreigner. When a person is a foreign in another a country he/she may face hardships in terms of discrimination, legal policies, language barrier, social and economic disparities and other issues what will came about. Thus, it becomes as a welcomed relief if such an individual gets a fellow country man or woman to assist him/her to settle in the foreign land. The Turkish woman As pertaining to why the Turkish woman already in America will want to assist fellow Turkish people coming to America, there will be several reasons to explain this, are personal, social and political. Below are some of the reasons that try to explain why the Turkish woman is helping others; Alienation: This normally occurs in new Turkish people due to the assimilation difficulties that they will experience in their America as they struggle to adapt to the new country. This leads to the alienating of the new Turkish people from their culture stimulating the identity crisis within their societies. This alienation can lead social isolation that might also lead to depression through stress anger and fatigue which normally happen to detract the new Turkish people from settling in America. This case of alienation has been shown to have taken a large proportion of the new Turkish members of the society who are classified as foreigners. Thus, that is why the Turkish woman is assisting fellow Turkish people to settle and find jobs in America. Psychological Insinuation: Another reason as to why the woman is helping other Turkish people to settle in America is because of psychological insinuation. Racial disparity is said to be having psychological implication on new Turkish people coming in the American society since the Turkish are forced to participate in a particular culture in America, especially in institution such as schools and companies. This is so because; it forces them to alter to their home cultures. Through this, the new Turkish people will face a variety of conflicts giving rise to a psychological and identity problem. It is true that coming to a new country, particularly in America will highly challenge the individual. There is an increased need for a foreigner to be assisted in a new country so that he/she is able to undergo as minimal psychological insinuation. Therefore, the Turkish woman is assisting these people to able to reduce their psychological insinuation that they may go through. Avoid discrimination It is said that discrimination in any place has a diversified effects on the people being discriminated about, which normally differ with the presence of many factors including those of self attitudes and the cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. These factors target those people who are viewed as foreigners whereby a negative impact is brought, i. e. when a community fails to address the needs of its new members. This may be done when the community is formulating it’s polices that include the exclusion of minority/foreign cultures and languages which proves to lack relevance to the community. This in turn make foreigners to loose hope whereby they fail to settle and some of them may give up and opt to go their home country such issues lead to increase in difficulties for the new turkey arrival in America. However, if there are assisted by someone whom they know they easily overcome such issues. Same religious beliefs The other reason as to why culture forms a central core of the Turkish woman to help fellow Turkish people is that of religion. Religion is a system of shared beliefs and rituals concerned with the sphere of the sacred or the supernatural and it usually affects the way of living especially in another country. According to latest research ethical systems consists of moral principles that are used to shape and guide behavior and thus affects personal activities. With diversity of religion systems it becomes difficult for other people to settle successfully in another country because of the differences that are involved between religions. For example, Islam religion is viewed as with radical principles in the eyes of many western countries and many Muslims are treated with suspicion. More so in America many Muslims are being associated with terrorism activities Thus, it becomes very hard for a Turkish Muslim to get a job in America as many companies shun away from employing such people. Thus the reason why the woman is helping other fellow Turkish is because she understands their religious beliefs. What motivates the woman to do this job? Social responsibility It has been observed that human being have a social responsibility of assisting each other whenever possible. In such a case where one has already settled in a foreign land, and other countrymen come by, it becomes a social responsibility to assist them. Bearing in mind that that Turkish woman is working a certain organization, she has better information about the legal working of the American system, the social welfare system, and where job opportunities can be found. At the same time the woman has knows where civil rights movements and other social bodies can be found, which can assisted the new Turkish people who are coming in to America. Thus, this is another reason why the woman is assisting other Turkish people. Gaining political mileage Another reason why the woman is helping others may be because she wants to gain political mileage among fellow countrymen, since they will feel indebted to her inn future. At the same time she will have an upper hand in the Turkish society in America and this can help her to advance her ideology among her people. Having political advantage comes with some political powers and benefits within the society. The woman thus, by the virtual of assisting others will have some powers that she will use in promoting the Turkish people interests in America. At the same time helping others will be easily settle in America and get jobs or schools will put them in a higher economic and social status. This will help them have economic powers that can be used to assist other either in America or back home. Conclusion Helping others is an important aspect in for an individual, it is more important when it comes to foreigners being assisted in other country. The reasons why a person helps others are varied and are both personal and social and can also be political. Discrimination, language barrier, religion, social and economic disparities among the natives and the foreigners are the major challenges that a person will encounter in a foreign land. For the Turkish woman, she helps others because of varied reasons that include among others avoidance of discrimination and legal understanding of the American system.
