Alvin Ailey’s signature work: â€Å"Revelations†, produced in 1960, is a prime example that reflected and exposed the social changes that were occurring during that era. The 1960s was marked as a time of great change as it was the era when America began to transform into an increasingly modern society. There were significant improvements in science (and technology exemplified by the start of the space exploration), which greatly changed how people lived and viewed the world. However, the most important changes were probably societal ones, namely the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was categorized by African Americans expressing their dissatisfactions with the injustices that they had to endure in past century. Although African Americans were liberated from slavery after the Civil War, they still had to deal with the inequality of racial segregation. Under those laws, African Americans had to face disadvantages such as (but not limited to): lack of voting rights, inferior quality of facilities, and unequal treatment under law. In sociological terms, there was little social mobility, institutionalized discrimination, and communities were racially stratified. It was not until the 1960s that the nonviolent protests and public civil disobediences of African Americans began to gain prominence and produce effect. In 1960, one of the many famous acts of civil disobedience, the â€Å"Greensboro Sit-Ins† occurred. The sit-ins consisted of multiple instances of nonviolent protests at the Woolworth Store in Greensboro, North Carolina by local African American students. After repeated protests and growing tensions, the store finally desegregated its services. Coincidently, Ailey’s â€Å"Revelations† was produced in the same year that the protests occurred. Although there wasn’t a direct correlation between the Greensboro protests and the creation of Ailey’s dance, the production of Ailey’s dance was nevertheless a sign of social change. When Ailey’s dance company first performed, they changed the entire dynamic of American Dance Theater as African American way of life was finally represented by African Americans instead of by proxies of Caucasian dancers. The ability of African American dancers to represent their own culture shows the social change of the transfer of authority (of the dance theater industry) from the dominant group to the minority group. Another way that Ailey’s dance company signified social change was its integration of different ethnic groups. Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Lester Horton, Ailey decided to include dancers of different races into his dance company in 1962. Ailey’s practice of what sociologists termed â€Å"ethnic pluralism† was another sign of social change. Besides evidencing social change, â€Å"Revelations† also reflected the various elements of American society. The dance itself was able to show these elements through the contents of the plot, which was divided into three sections: â€Å"Pilgrim of Sorrow†, â€Å"Take Me to the Water†, and â€Å"Move Members, Move†. The first section, â€Å"Pilgrims of Sorrow† is about the sufferings of African Americans during the slavery era. The story depicts African Americans toiling through hard labor as slaves and trying to use song as an outlet for relief. Ailey also incorporates the song â€Å"I’ve been ‘Buked†, by Hall Johnson, to accentuate the agony and frustrations of African Americans. The reason why Ailey brought back stories of extreme hardship is perhaps he wanted to remind Americans how much pain African Americans had to go through. He wanted to emphasize how important it was for people to realize the need for the abolishment of segregation. Ailey also probably felt that because America’s history of racial inequality has existed for such a long time, African Americans have become what William Wilson calls the â€Å"permanent underclass†. Even after the Civil Rights Act passed, like W. E. B du Bois described in â€Å"The Philadelphia Negro†, African Americans still face financial disadvantages due to the situations they were put in before the passing of the bill. With the coexistence of people’s constant â€Å"just-world hypothesis† and stubbornness of their cognitive schema, the disadvantages of African Americans will never receive the deserved attention as people will just assume that their misfortunes were brought upon by themselves. This is probably why Ailey recognized the bitter truth that racism will always exist. Slightly different from â€Å"Pilgrims of Sorrow†, â€Å"Take me to the Water† and â€Å"Move Members, Move† conveys a more positive atmosphere as it portrays scenes of baptism and church service. Take me to the Water† depicts a woman by the riverside, ready to get baptized while â€Å"Move Members, Move† depicts a celebratory church scene. These dances are also reflections of American society as it shows the roles of religion. One role of religion was providing comfort to those undergoing hardship. When African Americans went through slavery, they sought comfort in God and prac ticing Christianity. Another role of religion in American society was providing solidarity. Emile Durkheim believed that religion brought unity amongst people and connection between individuals. This is reflected in American society as Christianity, America’s largest religion, underlies the many values in American culture. Another important aspect of Ailey’s dance that is worth mentioning is Ailey’s own life. When he was working on â€Å"Revelations†, a lot of the content was the result of his upbringings. Ailey grew up in rural Texas in the segregation era. At that time, especially in Texas, African Americans lived under constant danger as they not only faced discrimination, but also violence and risks of random lynching. All of these atrocities combined are probably what allowed Ailey to have such strong feelings towards the suffering of the slaves in the first part of his dance. Another influential moment in Alvin Ailey’s life was his exposure to literature. When he studied at universities in California, he learned of the writings of famous African American writers such as Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. In addition to his meeting with Maya Angelou, he perhaps became influenced and meant his performance to be an act to promote civil rights. Another influence of Ailey’s life was his exposure to religion. When he was young, he attended a Southern Baptist church. The songs and hymns that he heard when he went to church was probably influential to his other two dances â€Å"Take me to the Water† and â€Å"Move Members, Move†. This goes to show that what people experience in their childhood greatly influences their social identity as an adult. From Ailey’s background and dance piece, it could be seen that America during the 1960s was dominated by the Caucasian race, had a strong sense of religion (specifically Christianity), and had an unequal society. It was also beginning to advance into a developed society, which explains the rapid social change. To a certain extent, America today still possesses some discrimination towards certain ethnic groups, and equality isn’t exactly fully established in every aspect of the country. Nevertheless, as society progresses, so will its values. There will come a point in the future when all of the negative aspects that society used to possess will change for the better. However, it is important to be aware of the need of social change. One way that social change can be exercised is through art. Art is a highly human expression, and is one of the many methods that can facilitate social change. There are two different minerals that can be identified as what most of the population would call jade, nephrite and jadeite. Although they appear to be the same they each have their own unique properties and characteristics. Nephrite is a chemical mixture of actinolite and tremolite and is calcium and magnesium iron silicate occurring in colors ranging from white to spinach green to black. Nephrite is part of the group of rock forming minerals called amphiboles (Desautels 1960). It is a double chain silicate and also contains water (Keller 1990). Jadeite is sodium aluminum silicate often found with calcium and iron and occurs in colors ranging from white to emerald green and other colors. Jadeite is part of the rock forming mineral pyroxene group (Desautels 1960). Like nephrite, jadeite has small crystals that interlock which give it its durability and strength; however it doesn’t have the double chain like nephrite because it is not an amphibole. For the purpose and r equirements of this paper, the focus will be on jadeite. In addition to its unique chemical makeup of NaAlSi2O6 (Holden 1991), jadeite has several other interesting properties and characteristics as well. The color of jadeite can vary from white to green, white with greenish spots, pale lavender, bluish lavender, emerald green (known as â€Å"Imperial Jade†), silvery white, reddish brown, and brownish red (National Audubon Society 1998) and its luster can be described as a dull or waxy appearance (Holden 1991). Jadeite has a hardness of 6  ½ 7 on Mohl’s scale (National Audubon Society 1998). Jadeite cleavages in two directions at almost 90 degrees (87 degrees and 93 degrees), which makes it very distinct (National Audubon Society 1998). It has a specific gravity of 3.3 to 3.5 (National Audubon Society 1998) and a monoclinic crystal system (Holden 1991). Jadeite is very brittle and tough and can be transparent to opaque (National Audubon Society 1998). Jadeite’s unique characteristics and properties are largely due to the way in which jadeite is formed. Jadeite is formed by â€Å"high-pressure regional metamorphism, which occurs where rocks are subjected to very deep burial but relatively low temperature† (Keller 1990). The process of high-pressure and low temperature conditions occur beneath the surface of the ocean and over millions of years. Peter C. Keller Ph. D. states that when the ocean floor slides beneath the edge of a continent the high-pressure and low-temperature conditions occur that are necessary for jadeite to occur (Keller 1990). This happens because the clashing of the two pieces of rock form a great amount of pressure yet the cold temperatures of the ocean result in the low-temperature needed for this mineral to come about. As pieces of the ocean floor fall off and are pushed back into the earth’s surface, recrystallization occurs with significant high-pressure (Keller 1990). The resultin g rocks are known as blueschist or prehnite and vesuvianite in and jadeite is finally located in lode hydrothermal replacement deposits (National Audubon Society 1998). These special circumstances result in the mineral known as jadeite and the rocks, which are iron rich, affect the color of the jadeite that is formed. This is particularly special to jadeite because the color of jadeite is what can determine its market value. For example, â€Å"Imperial Jade† which is a deep, rich shade of green, is highly valued by art collectors and jewelry collectors alike. This highly valued shade of green occurs due to the presence of chromium (Hall 1994). Jadeite predominantly found in Burma, San Benito Co., California, and also Cloverdale Sonoma Co., California. Jadeite deposits have also been found in Guatemala, China, Japan, New Zealand, Western Canada, Alaska and even Wyoming (Holden 1991). One of the most important sources of jade is Myanmar, which has supplied China with jade for over 200 years (Hall 1994). Even though it seems that jadeite is found in many different places of the world, the gem quality of jadeite is actually very rare on a world-wide basis (Keller 1990). Jadeite has a long and interesting history mainly due to its hardness and unique color. Early aborigines along the Amazon River used jadeite for tools and weapons because of its strength and hardness (Desautels 1960). After that, Spanish conquerors of Mexico and were introduced to jadeite when then came to Central America. They believed that jade held special healing powers, especially for kidney ailments (Holden 1991). They named jade â€Å"piedra de ijada† which is Spanish for â€Å"stone of the flank† (Holden 1991). Many years after the Spaniards where introduced to the mystical stone, jadeite was identified in 1863 by French chemist Alexis Damour and the scientific name was coined by the original trade name there after (Holden 1991). The ancient Chinese worked jadeite as early as 1000 B.C. for tools and other such uses. However, jade carving finally became a revered art subsidized by Chinese Royalty during the Ching Dynasty (1644-1912) and reached its peak in relatively modern times (Desautels 1960). Now these jadeite carvings are prized possessions of many art collectors around the world. Jadeite carvings can be priceless pieces of art sought after by many art collectors and can come with a hefty price tag (Holden 1991). Today jadeite is used and fashioned into beads, earrings, bracelets, and cabochons for rings or broaches (National Audubon Society 1998). Because of its unique formation and sometimes high costs, it’s no wonder that many people have tried to simulate jadeite. There are several different way in which jadeite is copied. Serpentine is a jade stimulant because of its convincing color and luster, but is easily detected because it isn’t as hard as jadeite. Other green silicates like californite, massive diopside, and massive green grossularite garnet are also used to simulate jadeite and are more difficult to detect because of their similar hardness to jadeite (Holden 1991). Because of this, scientists, geologists, gemologists and even jewelers have found several ways in which to separate true jadeite from other imposters. One way is to use a petrographic microscope or a refractometer can determine the refractive index (Desautels 1960) which is specific to jadeite. The best method to precisely identify jadeite involved the X-ray diffraction powder method. This is the best method because it depends on th e fact that every crystalline mineral yields a characteristic pattern stemming from difference in internal structure (Desautels 1960) and therefore isn’t confused with other minerals like those the appear to look like jadeite. Even though jadeite is a naturally beautiful mineral, there are ways that it is enhanced and altered to improve in physical appearance. Grey or pale green jadeite can be dyed to look like a strong rich colored jade, like Imperial Jade which is the most sought after (Desautels 1960). Other stones, like Quarzite, can be dyed to resemble or substitute jadeite (Desautels 1960). Jadeite is sometimes imitated with semi opaque or opaque glass. There are many ways in which jadeite can be faked or changed to be more appealing to consumers. Jadeite is a special mineral that has been enjoyed by thousands of people in hundreds of different cultures and is still prized today by many. Innuendo Innuendo Innuendo By Maeve Maddox The word innuendo derives from a Latin verb meaning â€Å"to nod to, to signify.† As a legal term in the Middle Ages, innuendo was used to introduce the explanation of a word that was previously uncertain. For example, in modern conversation, we often find ourselves explaining an ambiguous pronoun: â€Å"Mary and Gilda went to the fair. She–I mean Mary–paid for the food.† A medieval lawyer might have said, â€Å"Mary and Gilda went to the fair. She–innuendo Mary–paid for the food.† From being used to clarify, the noun innuendo has come to be used as a way to imply a thought without explicitly stating it: innuendo (noun): An oblique hint, indirect suggestion; an allusive remark concerning a person or thing, esp. one of a depreciatory kind. Here are some examples of current use: Obeng (1997) defines specific categories of verbal indirectness, such as evasion, innuendo, circumlocution, and metaphor. They seldom spoke and when they did they were always surrounded by family or friends, their conversations  sprinkled with innuendo  that only they understood. However, the protagonists’  innuendo-sprinkled  banter was also laced with sanctimonious, self-righteous platitudes about the senselessness of war. The site NameItChangeIt.com is a nonpartisan site that brings the sexist innuendo of political rhetoric into the open. The innuendo of political rhetoric has acquired a specialized term: â€Å"dog-whistle politics.† George F. Knox of the Center for Professionalism and Ethics at the Florida International University Law School explains dog-whistle politics this way: it’s like dog whistles – the pitch is beyond the  capacity of human beings to hear. But the dogs can hear. And so it is with innuendo. Only the people who have a connection with it can recognize it. Like any rhetorical device, innuendo may be used to enrich expression or to manipulate meaning.
